Saliya Mwanza Confident Copper Queens Can Overcome Nigeria
Copper Queens defender Saliya Mwanza says Zambia is fully focused on claiming another three points when they face Nigeria in a crucial Group C match at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Zambia heads into the highly anticipated encounter in confident mood after opening the tournament with an emphatic 6-0 victory over Egypt. Their opponents, Nigeria, are under pressure following a surprise 3-2 defeat to Malawi in their first group match.
Zambia Ready for Nigeria’s Response
Mwanza believes the Super Falcons will approach the match with extra determination as they seek to recover from their opening setback, but insists the Copper Queens are prepared for the challenge.
“We know Nigeria will come into this game determined because they lost their first match against Malawi,” Mwanza said.
“They’ll be fighting for maximum points, but we’re also ready. We’ve prepared well and our target is to win the game.”
The defender acknowledged that Zambia’s impressive victory over Egypt is now behind them, with the team’s full attention firmly on the next assignment.
“Our win over Egypt has given us confidence, but that’s in the past now. Both teams need the three points, so we expect a very competitive match.”
She also recalled Nigeria’s victory over Zambia at the previous WAFCON but said the Copper Queens are determined to produce a different outcome this time.
“They beat us the last time we met, but we’re determined not to let that happen again.”
Mwanza Reflects on WAFCON Debut
The young defender also shared her experience of making her senior WAFCON debut, admitting she had to overcome early nerves before settling into the tournament.
“I was nervous at first, but I managed to overcome it. Playing at WAFCON is something every footballer dreams of, and I’m grateful for the opportunity.”
Mwanza praised the experienced members of the squad for helping the younger players adjust to the demands of continental football.
“The senior players have supported us a lot and continue to encourage us, which has made settling into the team much easier.”
Zambia currently sits at the top of Group C on goal difference after their convincing victory over Egypt, while Malawi occupy second place following their historic win over Nigeria.
Saturday’s encounter is expected to play a major role in shaping the group standings, with the Copper Queens aiming to move a step closer to the quarterfinals and the Super Falcons desperate to revive their campaign.
