Morocco Defeat Algeria to Strengthen WAFCON Quarterfinal Bid

Tournament hosts Morocco boosted their hopes of reaching the knockout stages of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after securing a narrow 1-0 victory over regional rivals Algeria in a closely contested Group A encounter on Thursday.

A second-half strike from Sanaa Massoudi proved enough to separate the two sides in a tense North African derby, handing the Atlas Lionesses a valuable three points in front of their home supporters.

Massoudi Breaks the Deadlock

The opening half was evenly balanced, with both teams showing defensive discipline and limiting clear-cut scoring opportunities. Morocco enjoyed more possession and looked the more threatening side but struggled to find a way through Algeria’s organised backline.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 77th minute when Massoudi found space inside the penalty area and calmly finished to give the hosts a deserved lead.

Hosts Hold Firm

After taking the advantage, Morocco managed the closing stages well, denying Algeria any meaningful opportunities to force an equaliser.

The disciplined defensive display ensured the Atlas Lionesses held onto their slim lead to record an important victory that significantly improves their chances of progressing to the WAFCON quarterfinals.

The win strengthens Morocco’s position in Group A as Jorge Vilda’s side continues its quest for continental success on home soil.

Morocco will now shift its attention to the next group-stage fixture against Senegal, where another positive result could secure a place in the knockout rounds and maintain the momentum gained from the hard-fought derby victory.
