Paina Credits Green Eagles Move for Growth and Confidence Boost

Green Eagles defender Headson Paina has hailed his debut MTN Super League season as a major stepping stone in his career, saying the experience has helped him grow both as a player and as a person.

The young right-back joined the Choma-based side from Makeni All Stars at the start of the 2025/26 campaign and quickly established himself as a key member of Perry Mutapa’s squad.

Known for his speed, defensive discipline and comfort on the ball, Paina wasted little time adapting to life in Zambia’s top flight and earned regular playing time throughout the season.

His impressive performances did not go unnoticed, with the defender receiving a call-up to the Zambia national team for the Mukura Four Nations Tournament in Botswana, where he featured in both matches for Chipolopolo.

Looking back on a memorable first season at the highest level, Paina admitted the transition came with challenges but believes the experience has strengthened him.

“It has been a great season for me. Playing in the Super League for the first time and getting an opportunity to represent the national team was something special. It gave me confidence and helped me grow as a player,” he said.

The defender revealed that he arrived at Green Eagles determined to make the most of the opportunity and prove he belonged at the top level.

“When I joined the club, I knew I had to work hard and show what I could do. I believed in myself and gave everything I had. I am happy with the progress I have made so far,” Paina added.

He also credited the club’s senior players for helping him settle into professional football, saying their guidance played an important role in his development.

“The experienced players were very supportive. They encouraged me, pushed me to improve and shared valuable advice. As young players, we learn a lot from them and that has helped me mature both on and off the field,” he said.

Paina further praised head coach Perry Mutapa, saying he enjoyed working under the tactician and adapted quickly to the team’s playing philosophy.

“I think I adapted well to the coach’s tactics and style of play. I enjoy learning different approaches to the game, and that helped me fit into the team,” he explained.

Despite enjoying a successful individual campaign, the defender admitted the team was disappointed to miss out on qualification for the ABSA Cup, particularly after a crucial defeat to Mines United ended their hopes.

However, he described making his Super League debut as the standout moment of the season and also reflected proudly on scoring his first top-flight goal against Red Arrows at Nkoloma Stadium.

Although Green Eagles lost that match, Paina said finding the net in the Super League remains one of his most cherished memories from an unforgettable first season.
