South Africa Make History as Morocco Seal Place in World Cup Knockout Stage

South Africa have written a new chapter in their football history after advancing beyond the group stage of the FIFA World Cup for the first time, following a hard-fought 1-0 win over South Korea at Estadio Monterrey.

A decisive moment arrived in the 63rd minute when Thapelo Maseko found the back of the net, a goal that proved enough to secure second place in Group A on four points. The result also left South Korea waiting anxiously in third place as they hoped results elsewhere would go their way.

Head coach Hugo Broos praised his side’s discipline and growth, describing the achievement as the product of years of steady development and unity within the squad. He highlighted South Africa’s tactical organisation, noting how they managed to limit South Korea’s attacking space while protecting their narrow lead in a tense final stretch.

“It is difficult to explain what this feels like… we have become friends. We just have to enjoy this,” Broos said, reflecting on what he called a long-term journey built on teamwork and belief.

Elsewhere, Morocco also confirmed their place in the Round of 32 after an entertaining 4-2 comeback win over Haiti.

Despite a shaky start that saw them concede an early own goal from goalkeeper Bono in the 10th minute, Morocco quickly regained control of the match. Goals from Gessime Yassine, Ismael Saibari, Achraf Hakimi, and Soufiane Rahimi completed the turnaround and secured qualification.

Ismael Saibari also played a key role in Morocco’s attacking response, helping his side shift momentum before halftime as they pushed forward with greater intensity and purpose.

Speaking after the match, Hakimi admitted it was not a straightforward contest, pointing to the early setback but praising Morocco’s response and tactical adjustments. He emphasized the importance of winning key duels and maintaining focus under pressure, especially after falling behind early.

With both South Africa and Morocco progressing, the tournament continues to deliver standout moments for African football on the global stage, with both sides now turning their attention to the knockout rounds.
