Egypt Condemn Officiating After Controversial World Cup Exit to Argentina
Egypt’s players, coaching staff and football authorities have criticised the officiating following their dramatic 3-2 defeat to Argentina, claiming key refereeing decisions played a major role in their FIFA World Cup elimination.
The Pharaohs appeared on course for a famous victory after establishing a 2-0 lead before Argentina produced a remarkable late comeback to book a place in the quarter-finals.
However, the match was overshadowed by controversy after Egypt had a goal ruled out following a VAR review and were also denied two penalty appeals, prompting widespread frustration from the Egyptian camp.
Forward Mostafa Ziko, who scored one goal and saw another disallowed, questioned the performance of French referee François Letexier and suggested the decisions unfairly favoured Argentina.
“It was not fair. The referee was completely unfair,” an emotional Ziko said after the match.
“We cannot accept going out like this after leading 2-0 against Argentina. We feel we have suffered a great injustice.”
Head coach Hossam Hassan also expressed his disappointment, insisting his side had been treated unfairly.
“Why is there no fairness in football? We have suffered injustice today,” Hassan said. “The refereeing decisions had a huge impact on the outcome of the match.”
The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) also released a strongly worded statement condemning the officiating and questioning the application of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system.
“The Egyptian Football Association cannot remain silent regarding the refereeing decisions witnessed during the match against Argentina and the failure to make appropriate use of the VAR system,” the statement read.
“Several key incidents raised serious concerns and directly influenced the course of the game. A number of football experts and specialist analysts, both locally and internationally, have also highlighted the controversial refereeing decisions.”
Despite Egypt’s protests, Argentina advanced to the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals after completing a dramatic comeback, while the Pharaohs exited the tournament with lingering frustration over the officiating.
