Who Will Be Zesco United’s Next Coach? Ndola Giants Begin Search for New Head Coach

Zesco United have officially begun the search for a new head coach after confirming they will not retain club legend Winston Kalengo, who served as interim manager following the departure of Emmanuel Siwale.

The seven-time Zambian champions have advertised the vacant position, outlining the qualifications required for their next technical leader as they prepare for the upcoming season.

Among the key requirements is a minimum CAF A Licence, immediately narrowing the list of potential candidates and fuelling speculation over whether the club will appoint a local coach or look abroad for a more experienced tactician.

Zesco had reportedly identified George Lwandamina as their preferred candidate. However, the experienced coach recently committed his future to Nchanga Rangers by signing a new two-year contract, forcing the Ndola-based club to explore other options.

Several experienced Zambian coaches are currently available and could come into consideration.

Former Zanaco head coach Dan Kabwe remains unattached and could emerge as one of the contenders. Mwenya Chipepo, who has coached several clubs in the MTN Super League, also meets the required qualifications.

Former Chipolopolo coach Honour Janza is another experienced candidate available on the market, bringing valuable continental and international coaching experience.

Former Zambia national team technical director Lyson Zulu, who also holds the necessary CAF coaching qualifications, could also be considered, while former Green Eagles coach Alex Namazaba remains another potential local option.

However, Zesco United’s ambitions may ultimately determine the direction they take.

The club has consistently targeted success both domestically and in CAF inter-club competitions. With continental football remaining a major objective, management could opt for a foreign coach with proven experience in African club competitions if they believe such an appointment would strengthen their chances of competing for major honours.

For now, the search continues as one of Zambia’s biggest clubs looks to appoint the coach who will lead the next chapter at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium.
