Argentina Stun Egypt with Dramatic Comeback to Reach World Cup Quarter-Finals

Defending champions Argentina produced a stunning late comeback to defeat Egypt 3-2 and secure a place in the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals after an action-packed encounter at Atlanta Stadium.

Egypt looked set for one of the biggest upsets of the tournament after taking a commanding two-goal lead. Yasser Ibrahim opened the scoring early in the match before Mostafa Zico doubled the advantage in the 67th minute.

Argentina struggled to break down the resilient Egyptian defence, with captain Lionel Messi enduring a frustrating first half after seeing his penalty saved by goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir, who made several outstanding stops to keep the South Americans at bay.

The momentum shifted late in the match as Argentina mounted a remarkable comeback. Cristian Romero headed home from Messi’s delivery to reduce the deficit before Messi equalised four minutes later with a powerful effort that bounced in off the crossbar.

With extra time looming, Enzo Fernández completed the turnaround in the 92nd minute, heading in Lautaro Martínez’s cross to seal a dramatic 3-2 victory and send Argentina into the last eight.

The match also featured a major VAR controversy. Egypt believed they had doubled their lead before halftime when Mostafa Zico finished off a swift counterattack, but the goal was ruled out after a review determined that Marwan Attia had fouled Lisandro Martínez in the build-up. The decision sparked debate among fans and pundits, although Egypt eventually found their second goal later in the game.

Argentina will now face either Switzerland or Colombia in the quarter-finals as they continue their defence of the FIFA World Cup title.
