“Kansas Is My Home” – Chawinga Delighted After Signing New Deal
Malawi women’s national team star Temwa Chawinga has expressed her delight after signing a new contract extension with Kansas City Current that will keep her at the club until 2029.
The prolific forward said extending her stay was an easy decision, describing Kansas City as her home and praising the support she has received from the club and its fans since arriving in the United States.
“I am happy for this. The way the club and the city support me and my teammates is truly special,” Chawinga said.
“I’m looking forward to staying longer in Kansas City and working hard with my teammates.”
The Scorchers vice-captain believes her performances on the pitch played a major role in earning the contract extension.
Since joining Kansas City Current in 2024, Chawinga has established herself as one of the most dominant players in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL).
She became the first player in league history to win the NWSL Most Valuable Player award in consecutive seasons, claiming the honour in both 2024 and 2025.
Chawinga has also written her name into the record books as only the second player to win back-to-back Golden Boot awards. She scored 20 goals during the 2024 season before following it up with 15 goals in 2025, becoming just the second player in league history to register consecutive seasons with at least 15 goals.
The 2023 COSAFA Women’s Championship Player of the Tournament has continued her impressive form this season and currently sits second in the 2026 NWSL Golden Boot race with seven goals and two assists.
Kansas City Current co-owners Angie and Chris Long hailed Chawinga’s impact on the club, describing her as one of the best players in world football.
“Temwa is truly special, and no one changes the game more than she does,” the club owners said.
“She displays an unwavering commitment to scoring goals under pressure and when it matters most. Combined with her defensive presence, she is, without question, one of the best players in the world.”
They added: “She is someone people want to play with, and she makes our team better. We are so excited to extend her contract and keep her in Kansas City.”
The new deal provides a major boost for both Chawinga and Kansas City Current as they continue their pursuit of domestic success in the coming seasons.
