Ronaldo Makes World Cup History with Brace, Fires Back at Critics
Cristiano Ronaldo became the first player in history to score in six consecutive FIFA World Cups as Portugal cruised to a commanding 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan in Group K.
The Portugal captain delivered a vintage performance at Houston Stadium on Tuesday, scoring twice in the first half to inspire his side to their first win of the tournament.
The brace also saw the 41-year-old reach 10 World Cup goals, making him Portugal’s all-time leading scorer in the competition.
Ronaldo has now found the net in every World Cup since making his tournament debut in 2006, extending a remarkable record that spans two decades.
The historic performance came just days after the veteran forward faced criticism following Portugal’s disappointing opening match against DR Congo, where they failed to secure victory.
“It has been a difficult week. The criticism was intense, especially towards me,” Ronaldo said after the match.
“But after 23 or 24 years in football, I know how to deal with it.”
The Al Nassr star stressed the importance of unity within the squad and insisted external criticism would not distract the team from its objectives.
“The most important thing is the team and sticking together, and with our families as well, because those are the things we can control,” he said.
“What comes from outside, we can’t. We know that when we don’t play well, we’re always criticised, especially me, but as I said, I’m used to it.”
Ronaldo admitted that breaking records remains special but emphasized that Portugal’s success is his main priority.
“Scoring at a World Cup is always special. We wanted to respond after what happened in the last game, and we’re very happy,” he said.
“Personally, records are always nice, but the objective is always to help the national team achieve its goals.”
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner also sent a strong message to those who have questioned his ability to perform on football’s biggest stage.
“I always arrive. Sooner or later, I’m there. I just keep doing my work,” Ronaldo stated.
“I believe deeply in what I do and that God helps those who work hard. My career has always been like that. It’s not going to change now.”
Portugal’s emphatic victory strengthens their chances of progressing to the knockout stages as they continue their quest for a first-ever FIFA World Cup title.
