Former Chipolopolo striker Clifford Mulenga has backed Nkana FC as a potential surprise package in the 2026/27 MTN Super League title race, while identifying Power Dynamos and Red Arrows as the main favourites for the championship.
Mulenga believes the upcoming season will once again be shaped by the league’s established heavyweights, but insists Nkana cannot be ignored due to their history and competitive spirit.
Nkana Backed as Surprise Contenders
Mulenga described Nkana FC as one of the most unpredictable sides in Zambian football, capable of producing strong performances regardless of form or expectation.
He pointed to the club’s rich tradition and passionate supporters as key factors that can inspire big results throughout the season.
“Nkana remains one of the most unpredictable clubs in the league,” Mulenga said. “They are a dangerous dark horse because of their history, fan base, and ability to rise when least expected.”
Power Dynamos and Red Arrows Lead the Pack
Despite backing Nkana as a threat, Mulenga tipped Power Dynamos and Red Arrows as the strongest contenders for the league title.
The two clubs have dominated recent seasons, sharing four of the last five MTN Super League titles between them.
“These are currently the two benchmark clubs in Zambian football,” he explained.
Mulenga credited their success to strong structures, consistent recruitment, and stability within their squads.
“Their consistency has not come by luck but through strong club structure, player retention, disciplined recruitment, stability, and a clear football identity,” he added.
ZESCO United and Zanaco Still in the Conversation
Mulenga also highlighted ZESCO United as another side capable of challenging for honours if they resolve internal stability issues, particularly within the coaching department.
He believes their structure remains strong enough to compete with the league’s elite when properly organised.
He further suggested that Zanaco FC could re-emerge as contenders if they improve consistency and squad performance over the course of the season.
Title Race Set for Another Fierce Battle
With multiple clubs strengthening and rebuilding ahead of the new campaign, the 2026/27 MTN Super League is expected to deliver another competitive title race.
While Power Dynamos and Red Arrows remain the benchmark, Nkana’s potential resurgence adds another layer of unpredictability to the season.
