Robin Duke Raises Concerns Over Sundowns Goalkeeper Coach Following Williams’ Dip in Form

South African football journalist Robin Duke has questioned the impact of Kennedy Mweene as goalkeeper coach at Mamelodi Sundowns, suggesting the former Chipolopolo star may be partly responsible for Rowen Williams’ recent struggles in form.

Williams remains one of the key figures for South Africa national football team under coach Hugo Broos, but concerns have recently emerged in South Africa regarding the goalkeeper’s performances at club level.

Duke Questions Mweene’s Coaching Influence

Speaking on a football podcast, Duke openly expressed doubts about Mweene’s role as Sundowns’ head goalkeeper coach.

“I do not trust Kennedy Mweene as the goalkeeper coach at Sundowns,” Duke said.

According to Duke, Williams’ performances started declining after former goalkeeper coach Wendell Robinson left the club.

“When Rhulani Mokwena left and Wendell Robinson moved to AmaZulu, that is when Rowen Williams’ form started dropping,” he explained.

“I honestly do not believe Kennedy Mweene is the person inspiring him right now.”

Calls for Sundowns to Appoint Another Goalkeeper Coach

Duke argued that Sundowns should have looked elsewhere following Robinson’s departure despite Mweene’s decorated playing career.

“As much as Kennedy Mweene won AFCON and was part of the Sundowns team that won the CAF Champions League, that alone does not automatically make someone a top goalkeeper coach,” Duke added.

“I think Sundowns should have searched for another experienced goalkeeper coach after Wendell left.”

Despite the criticism, Mweene recently praised Williams following Sundowns’ CAF Champions League success.

Mamelodi Sundowns secured their second continental title after a 1-1 draw away to AS FAR sealed a 2-1 aggregate victory.

Williams played a decisive role during the encounter after saving a penalty in the second half to help Sundowns maintain their advantage.

Mweene Explains Goalkeeper Preparation

Speaking on Soccer Africa, Mweene revealed that detailed preparation played a major role in Williams’ performance during the crucial match.

“I have been in these situations before, which is why I remain calm,” Mweene said.

“We normally study all the penalty takers either the day before or on the morning of the game, so we were fully prepared.”
