Bafana Bafana Urged to Win 2026 World Cup Ahead of Tournament

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has delivered a bold and emotional message to Bafana Bafana, urging the national team to go all the way and win the 2026 FIFA World Cup as excitement builds across the country.

Speaking at the team’s official send-off dinner, Ramaphosa called on Hugo Broos’ side to carry the hopes of the nation and aim for football’s ultimate prize rather than simply making up the numbers.

Strong Message of Belief from the Presidency

Ramaphosa praised Bafana Bafana’s return to the global stage, describing the squad as a revitalised team full of confidence, hunger, and determination ahead of the tournament.

He encouraged the players to believe in themselves and embrace the challenge of competing against the world’s best teams.

The president made it clear that South Africa’s expectations go far beyond participation in the group stages.

“Now we want to see you lift that trophy,” he said. “Not the group stage, not the knockout rounds. You are bringing the FIFA World Cup trophy home.”

No Early Exit Allowed

Ramaphosa stressed that the nation does not want to see an early elimination, urging the team to push as far as possible in the competition.

He challenged the players to adopt a winning mentality and represent the country with pride on the global stage.

“We don’t want to hear the words elimination or bowing out,” he added during his address to the squad.

Light-Hearted Remarks on National Celebrations

In a more relaxed moment, the president joked that he expects increasing calls for public holidays if Bafana Bafana continue progressing through the tournament.

He even suggested he would be present should South Africa reach the final and lift the trophy on July 19, adding a humorous touch to his otherwise serious message.

“I will be there when you lift the trophy,” Ramaphosa said. “And yes, I will declare it a public holiday.”

Group Stage Challenge Ahead

Bafana Bafana have been drawn in Group A for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where they will open their campaign against Mexico before facing South Korea and the Czech Republic.

The group presents a difficult test, but also an opportunity for South Africa to announce themselves on the world stage early in the tournament.

Broos Completes Final Preparations

Head coach Hugo Broos has already finalised his squad for the tournament as preparations continue ahead of the global showpiece.

With expectations rising at home, attention now turns to how Bafana Bafana will respond when they step onto the world stage in 2026.
