James Phiri Hails Rising Goalkeeping Standards in Zambian Football

Former U-20 International Credits Specialized Coaching for Improvement Among Shot-Stoppers

Former James Phiri believes goalkeeping standards in the Zambian league have improved significantly, attributing the progress to better coaching structures and increased competition for places at clubs.

The former Zambia Under-20 international says modern goalkeepers are becoming more complete players, with many teams now investing heavily in specialist goalkeeper training.

Goalkeepers Showing Greater Confidence

Phiri, who was part of Zambia’s successful squad that won the 2017 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, noted that goalkeepers across the league are displaying higher levels of confidence and technical ability.

“There has definitely been a noticeable improvement in goalkeeping standards,” Phiri said.

“You can see that goalkeepers are becoming more confident, and many clubs have invested in qualified goalkeeper coaches who are helping players develop.”

Modern Game Demands More from Goalkeepers

According to Phiri, the role of a goalkeeper has evolved considerably, with coaches expecting more than just shot-stopping abilities.

He explained that modern goalkeepers are required to contribute to build-up play, communicate effectively with defenders, and remain comfortable when in possession of the ball.

“Goalkeepers today must be able to play with their feet and help organize the defence,” he said.

“We are starting to see more of those qualities in our local league.”

Specialist Coaching Making the Difference

Phiri believes the growing presence of dedicated goalkeeper coaches has played a major role in improving performances.

In previous years, many clubs paid little attention to specialized goalkeeper development, but that trend has changed significantly.

“Almost every serious club now has a coach focused specifically on goalkeepers,” he explained.

“That is helping players improve both technically and mentally, which is reflected in their performances.”

Competition Driving Improvement

The former Kitwe United goalkeeper also pointed to increased competition for starting positions as another factor behind the rising standards.

He believes goalkeepers are working harder than ever to maintain their places in the team, resulting in stronger performances across the league.

Better Decision-Making on the Ball

Phiri further encouraged players to make better use of possession rather than relying on automatic back passes.

“You recover the ball and often the first thought is to pass it backwards,” he said.

“Sometimes there is space to turn, move forward, or quickly release attacking players.”

He added that positive and adventurous play from deeper positions can help teams create more opportunities and provide better service to their forwards.

Recognition for Outstanding Performances

The improvement in goalkeeping quality was highlighted this season when Mangani Banda was named MTN-FAZ Goalkeeper of the Season for the 2025/26 campaign.

Phiri believes such recognition reflects the progress being made in the goalkeeping department throughout Zambian football and expects standards to continue rising in the years ahead.
